If you haven’t had this experience then you probably don’t know about spyware. Spyware in a nut shell is software that is installed on your computer without your consent and monitors your behaviors on the computer. Now you say “How do I get rid of this?” well there are many steps into removing spyware. Spyware comes in the forms of toolbars, pop-ups, and malicious programs that are installed in your computer. The most famous forms of spyware to date have been the bonzi buddy, gator, and even the alexa toolbar.
The first step that I would recommend would be to search google for anti-spyware tools such as Spybot Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spyware Doctor, Webroot spysweeper, and CCleaner. These tools are essential for cleaning out spyware, I would recommend using 2 or 3 of these scanners. Each scanner has different scanning procedures, which means one might find one variant and the other will find a different variant that the other cannot find.
Another way to remove spyware is by downloading a program using Sysinternal tools, now I will warn you, this is more for the propeller heads out there who know what they are doing. In this step I would recommend looking at the process explorer in this program and looking for anything that does not have a description or a company name, this should be your cue to finding where the spyware is. Kill anything without the company name, unless you know what it is, look for anything fishy, and look up company names on google if you do not know what they are. Next I would download the autoruns utility which modifies your msconfig file, from there you can stop these processes from running at start up.
My last recommendation is to update your computer on a daily basis, and if you haven’t upgraded to internet explorer 7 I recommend you do so! I also would recommend downloading firefox. Firefox has many add-ons that will help you prevent spyware. The most notable extensions are noscript, and adblock. You should also run windows update whenever you can to get the latest patches from threats.
Remember always! You can fight spyware!
